About the role

 

We are seeking an experienced Grade 3 Medical Scientist to join our Transfusion Laboratory team as a deputy to the Senior Scientist. In this role, you will support the Senior Scientist with daily operations, workflow coordination, and quality activities while helping to maintain a safe and compliant laboratory environment.

You will perform a wide range of pre-transfusion testing, including operating automated analysers, performing manual serological testing for complex antibodies, antibody titrations, auto-adsorption, elution studies and managing a busy blood inventory. In addition, there will also be responsibilities associated with the governance of a Transfusion Laboratory which includes two Category B laboratories and external hospitals with blood fridges.

The role also involves providing education and support including troubleshooting and maintaining staff competencies and participation in rostered on-call Senior Scientist duty.

 

About you 

 

To be successful in this role you will need to be an experienced Medical Scientist, with a minimum of 8 years experience, who is passionate in Haematology with key interest in Transfusion Medicine.

The requirements for the role are:

· Bachelor of Science (Medical Laboratory Science) or equivalent qualification acceptable for AIMS membership

· Minimum 8 years post-graduation experience as a Medical Scientist (excluding student placement), with substantive experience in Transfusion

· Haematology experience would be an advantage

· Demonstrated experience and competency in pre-transfusion testing techniques

· Demonstrated experience in managing a Hospital Blood Bank inventory

· Excellent attention to detail, analytical ability, and problem-solving skills.

· Well-developed written and oral communication skills

· Strong communication skills and ability to support and guide junior staff

· Commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement

· Australian Resident or Visa to work in Australia

· A strong commitment to high quality care

· The ability to work as part of a diverse team

· Not mandatory but preferred: AIMS, AABB or ISBT membership

 

Healthcare workers are strongly recommended to follow COVID vaccination recommendations provided in the Australian Immunisation handbook (based on ATAGI advice). Seasonal vaccination against influenza is a mandatory requirement of this role and an offer is conditional on this being up to date prior to employment.

Those that are offerred and/or start between January and April do not require an up to date vaccination for Influenza to progress providing they are aware of its requirement later in the year. Those that are offerred and/or start between May and December require the up to date Influenza vaccination prior to offer.
