About the role
We are seeking an experienced Grade 2 Medical Scientist to join our Haematology team as a deputy to the Senior Scientist. In this role, you will support the Senior Scientist with daily operations, workflow coordination, and quality activities while helping to maintain a safe and compliant laboratory environment.
You will perform a wide range of haematology, coagulation and transfusion‑related testing, including operating automated analysers, assessing blood film morphology, validating results, and ensuring high‑quality, timely reporting. Responsibilities also include analyser maintenance, adherence to SOPs, and compliance with NATA accreditation requirements.
The role involves supporting troubleshooting, guiding staff, maintaining competency, and contributing to efficient workflow based on clinical priorities.
Participation in rostered shift work and on‑call duties is required to support the operational needs of the laboratory.
About you
To be successful in this role you will be an experienced Medical Scientist, with a minimum of 5 years experience, who is passionate about Haematology, has experience in morphology and thrives in a supportive, team‑focused environment.
- Bachelor of Science (Medical Laboratory Science) or equivalent qualification acceptable for AIMS membership.
- Minimum 5 years post‑graduation experience as a Medical Scientist (excluding student placement), with substantive experience in Haematology.
- Any Blood Bank experience would be an advantage.
- Demonstrated experience and competency in blood film morphology skills.
- Strong interest and skills in Coagulation testing and troubleshooting.
- Excellent attention to detail, analytical ability, and problem‑solving skills.
- Well-developed written and oral communication skills
- Strong communication skills and ability to support and guide junior staff.
- Commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
- Australian Resident or Visa to work in Australia
- A strong commitment to high quality care
- The ability to work as part of a diverse team
Healthcare workers are strongly recommended to follow COVID vaccination recommendations provided in the Australian Immunisation handbook (based on ATAGI advice). Seasonal vaccination against influenza is a mandatory requirement of this role and an offer is conditional on this being up to date prior to employment.
