Turning Point was established in 1994 to provide leadership to the alcohol and drug field in Victoria. Turning Point is now a national treatment, research and education centre that provides leadership in the alcohol and drug, gambling and mental health sectors.

 

 

Combining research with service innovation, surveillance, system enhancements, education, capacity building and specialist support, Turning Point is a recognised centre of excellence that assists services, communities and governments to respond to current and emerging issues. Turning Point is part of Eastern Health and is affiliated with Monash University. 

 

 

Hamilton Centre

 

 

The Hamilton Centre is a statewide specialist service for people living with mental illness and substance use or addiction. It was established in response to the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Victoria's Mental Health System and encompasses a central hub (Turning Point) which links with Network Providers across the state.

 

 

The Hamilton Centre provides expert advice to support the mental health and alcohol and other drugs (AOD) workforce, as well as delivering better outcomes for Victorians seeking treatment for mental health concerns and substance addiction. The Hamilton Centre aims to provide outcomes such as improved access to specialist services, increased support for mental health professionals, and better evidence-based practice.

 

 

About the role

Are you passionate about helping people who have a lived experience of mental health and/or alcohol and other drugs, have a voice and receiving the best possible supports? 

 

 

Are you excited about the thought of joining a growing team of lived experience workers across Turning Point? 

Well, an exciting opportunity now exists for a lived experience peer support worker to take up a role within Turning Points Lived Experience Workforce within the Hamilton Centre Eastern Health team.

 

 

The role of the lived experience peer support worker is to provide support and information to clients, families and healthcare workers utilising our service. You will also play an active role, alongside the clinical team, in providing secondary consultation to both the mental health and wellbeing, and alcohol and other drug sectors referrers. You will also provide a consumer perspective at team meetings, huddles, and clinical reviews/multi-disciplinary team meetings.

 

 

You will assist consumers with recovery and wellness planning to help gain a sense of control and empowerment over their lives by building on strengths and resources and in turn, building self-advocacy. The role provides a range of opportunities including direct one-to-one engagement, group work and supporting research projects.  

 

 

About you 

 

 

To be successful in this role you will possess:

 

 

  • Lived experience of mental health and/or substance use and recovery who has accessed public MH/AOD services.
  • Experience working in a consumer lived experience/peer support worker role.  
  • Demonstrated ability to work systemically with internal and external services and staff to benefit individuals directly accessing these services as well as carers and families.
  • A strong commitment to high quality care
  • The ability to work as part of a diverse team
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills

Healthcare workers are strongly recommended to follow COVID vaccination recommendations provided in the Australian Immunisation handbook (based on ATAGI advice). Seasonal vaccination against influenza is a mandatory requirement of this role and an offer is conditional on this being up to date prior to employment.
