About the role
Eastern Health is inviting applications for the position of Provisional Fellow in Anaesthesia, commencing in February 2027. Positions are offered for 6 months by default, but 12 months will be considered.
Provisional Fellow positions are based at Box Hill Hospital but may occasionally involve working at other Eastern Health sites providing acute surgical services (Maroondah and Angliss Hospitals).
Provisional Fellows in Anaesthesia work under appropriate supervision to provide suitable anaesthesia for patients undergoing a wide range of surgical procedures, including:
- Vascular
- ENT
- Thoracics
- Upper GI and Hepatobiliary
- Colorectal
- Orthopaedics
- Plastics and Reconstructive
- Urology
- Obstetrics
- Gynaecology (including Gynaecological Oncology)
- Paediatric Surgery
Provisional Fellows are also involved in other services provided by the Department of Anaesthesia at Box Hill Hospital, including:
- Anaesthesia outside the Operating Suite (e.g. Interventional Radiology and Cardiology)
- Obstetric Analgesia
- Acute Pain Management
- Airway Management and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.
- Pre-Admission Clinic
Provisional Fellows are required to co-ordinate a non-clinical portfolio while working at Box Hill Hospital. Current non-clinical portfolios managed by Provisional Fellows include:
- Coordination of Morbidity and Mortality Meetings
- Coordination of Trainee Welfare and Mentoring programmes (Trainee Representative role)
- Medical Education (e.g. assisting trainees with exam preparation and running educational workshops)
- Participation in Department Audit and/or Research activities
- Participation in Peri-operative MDT meetings
Eastern Health follows the relevant AMA Doctors in Training employment agreement, as well as providing salary packaging facilities. Provisional Fellows are entitled to 5 weeks’ annual leave.

- Excellent communication and organisational skills
Healthcare workers are strongly recommended to follow COVID vaccination recommendations provided in the Australian Immunisation handbook (based on ATAGI advice). Seasonal vaccination against influenza is a mandatory requirement of this role and an offer is conditional on this being up to date prior to employment.
