About the role

Eastern Health is seeking a motivated and capable Senior Hospital Medical Officers to join its Obstetrics and Gynaecology service in a 12-month rotational position.

This role is designed to strengthen clinical, procedural, and professional skills within a supportive, closely supervised environment, with a strong emphasis on preparation for entry into the RANZCOG training program. It offers valuable exposure to advanced obstetrics and gynaecology practice, including participation in independent Caesarean section lists and gynaecology operating theatre sessions conducted alongside consultant specialists.

The successful applicants will be responsible for the care of inpatients within the obstetrics and gynaecology unit and will participate in outpatient clinics according to rostered duties. Clinical duties include contributing to consultative services for patients referred from other departments, as well as providing coverage for antenatal and postnatal wards, Delivery Suite, and acute presentations in the emergency setting. The role also involves active participation in theatre, assisting with and performing surgical procedures under direct consultant supervision, with a strong focus on the delivery of safe, timely, and evidence-based patient care in accordance with hospital protocols.

This position requires strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams that include midwifery, nursing, allied health professionals, and other medical specialists. The incumbent will be expected to provide clear and timely clinical documentation, communicate management plans effectively, and contribute to coordinated patient care across the service. There is also responsibility for coordinating diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and ensuring appropriate escalation and consultation when required. Overall, this role provides a structured and supportive pathway for developing advanced obstetric and gynaecological skills in a high-performing clinical environment.

The role places importance on active engagement in departmental education, including participation in teaching programs, peer review activities, and Mortality and Morbidity meetings. The successful candidate will also contribute to quality improvement initiatives within the unit and present findings to relevant forums. In addition, involvement in research activities is encouraged, with opportunities to participate in and support ongoing departmental projects.

A key feature of this position is its focus on professional development, with structured supervision, regular consultant support, and opportunities to progressively develop autonomy in clinical decision-making and procedural work.
