Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer

About the role
As the Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer (AHLO), you will provide culturally safe and effective support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients within the hospital setting. Working across Box Hill Hospital, Maroondah Hospital, Angliss Hospital, Wantirna Health and other Eastern Health sites, you will deliver patient liaison and cultural support services across the Emergency Department, acute, sub-acute, and inpatient services, ensuring that culturally appropriate care is provided to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families. You will also provide advice and guidance to staff on matters relating to Aboriginal cultural needs and culturally responsive care.
In collaboration with the patient's treating team, you will support the delivery of culturally appropriate care and facilitate safe discharge planning back into the community. This includes connecting patients with suitable Aboriginal and/or mainstream services that align with their individual preferences and needs.
The role plays an integral part in improving the identification of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and acts as a cultural broker and educator, fostering understanding and collaboration between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal staff, patients, and services.
About you
To be successful in this role you will possess:
- Relevant qualifications in community, social work or healthcare
- A strong commitment to high quality care
- Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience of the provision of Aboriginal health services in the mainstream health, primary care or welfare sectors.
- The ability to work as part of a diverse team
- Excellent communication and organisational skills
Healthcare workers are strongly recommended to follow COVID vaccination recommendations provided in the Australian Immunisation handbook (based on ATAGI advice). Seasonal vaccination against influenza is a mandatory requirement of this role, and an offer is conditional on this being up to date prior to employment.
