Mental Health Postgraduate Program (Registered Nurse) 

February 2027 Intake

Are you an experienced Registered Nurse with a passion for mental health nursing and planning to undertake postgraduate mental health studies in 2027? 

Join Eastern Health's Mental Health Postgraduate Program and develop the specialist knowledge, skills and confidence required to build a rewarding career in Mental Health and Wellbeing Services. 

This unique program combines postgraduate study with structured clinical experience, providing opportunities to rotate through acute inpatient and community mental health settings while receiving support from experienced clinicians, educators and mentors.

About the Program 

The Mental Health Postgraduate Program supports Registered Nurses undertaking postgraduate mental health studies while developing clinical capability across a range of mental health settings. 

 

The program offers: 

  • A permanent 0.8 EFT position within Mental Health & Wellbeing Services 

  • A structured postgraduate learning pathway 

  • Dedicated study days 

  • Clinical supervision and reflective practice opportunities 

  • Access to experienced mentors and Mental Health Nurse Educators 

  • Exposure to multidisciplinary and recovery-oriented models of care 

  • Career development opportunities across Mental Health & Wellbeing Services 

 

Participants will complete 2 rotations including: 

  • Acute Inpatient Mental Health Services 

  • Community Mental Health Services 

  • Specialist Mental Health Programs 

 

Potential rotation opportunities may include: 

  • Eastern Homeless Outreach Psychiatric Service (EHOPS) 

  • Mobile Support and Treatment Service (MSTS) 

  • Community Care Units (CCU) 

  • Adolescent Mental Health Services 

  • Adult Inpatient Services 

  • Older Adult Mental Health Services 

  • Alcohol and Other Drug Services 

 

About You 

To be successful in this role, you will have: 

  • Registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) via AHPRA 

  • A Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent qualification leading to unrestricted registration 

  • A minimum of 12 months post-registration nursing experience, including at least six months of contemporary mental health experience 

  • Enrolment in a Postgraduate Diploma (or equivalent postgraduate qualification) in Mental Health Nursing for 2027 and ongoing enrolment for the duration of the program 

  • Demonstrated clinical practice skills consistent with experience and scope of practice 

  • A commitment to recovery-oriented, person-centred care 

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 

  • A willingness to engage in clinical supervision, mentoring and reflective practice 

  • Strong motivation for ongoing learning and professional development 

  • Capacity to work a full rotating roster 

  • A current Victorian Driver Licence 

  • Current influenza vaccination in accordance with Eastern Health requirements 

 

Healthcare workers are strongly encouraged to follow COVID-19 vaccination recommendations outlined in the Australian Immunisation Handbook and current ATAGI advice. Seasonal influenza vaccination is a mandatory requirement for this role, and any offer of employment will be conditional on this requirement being met prior to commencement.
