Eastern Health

Eastern Health is one of Melbourne’s largest public health services. We provide a range of emergency, surgical, medical and general healthcare services and have a proud history of serving a diverse community.

Our Employee Value Proposition is “Being a part of Eastern Health means belonging to a welcoming team of healthcare experts”.

This statement aligns with our promise to our communities, patients, consumers and staff that we will be HEALTHIER TOGETHER. Bolder than a vision for the future, our promise calls us to action. We know that working together is the only way we can achieve what is necessary for a healthier future.

About the role and Service

Based at Eastern Health’s' Lilydale site in Melbourne’s outer east, the Yarra Ranges Day Oncology and Medical Unit provide a comprehensive range of day oncology, haematology, and medical infusion services across specialised treatment and supportive care streams. Operating as a seven‑chair unit, the service is a key hub for patients from the greater outer eastern region, supporting access to high‑quality, person‑centred cancer care close to home for the local and surrounding communities.

The Associate Nurse Manager plays a key leadership role within the unit, supporting the Nurse Manager in the delivery of safe, efficient, and patient‑focused services. The role provides visible clinical leadership, supports and develops staff, coordinates day‑to‑day operations, and actively promotes the implementation and monitoring of the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards to ensure excellence in care, continuity, and service improvement.

About you

To be successful in this role you will possess:

  • Current registration with AHPRA and Working with Children’s Check
  • Post graduate qualifications in Oncology
  • Clinical Expertise in Oncology and Infusion Therapies-able to demonstrate advanced clinical knowledge and recent experience in delivering evidenced-based chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, and supportive infusions in a day oncology setting
  • Leadership and Team Support-proven ability to support the Nurse manager in leading a small team, promoting professional accountability, positive culture, and high standards of care through visible leadership and collaborative problem solving
  • Coordination of patient flow and resources- strong organisational skills and initiative to manage patient bookings, flow and treatment timelines whilst adapting to evolving acuity, unplanned leave and limited infrastructure typical of smaller units
  • Commitment to safety and quality- sound understanding of quality improvement processes, risk management, and OH&S legislation, with demonstrated experience in maintaining high safety standards in relation to chemotherapy administration, aseptic technique, infection control, and emergency preparedness
  • Communication and interpersonal skills- excellent verbal and written communication skills, including confidence in liaising with medical consultants, pharmacy, patients, and external services. Ability to de-escalate conflict, advocate for staff and patients, and provide calm direction under pressure
  • Professional development and Mentorship- passion for ongoing education, onboarding and upskilling of team members, including junior nurses and bank nurses unfamiliar with setting. Willingness and overarching awareness to act as a clinical and professional role model.
  • Adaptability in a dynamic health environment- resilience and flexibility to respond to challenges of a small off-site unit; including clinical and administrative tasks, coordinating with external stakeholders, and troubleshooting issues with minimal onsite backup.
  • Commitment to organisational Values- a strong alignment with values of compassionate care, accountability, and community and with a track record of acting with integrity and professionalism

Healthcare workers are strongly recommended to follow COVID vaccination recommendations provided in the Australian Immunisation handbook (based on ATAGI advice). Seasonal vaccination against influenza is a mandatory requirement of this role and an offer is conditional on this being up to date prior to employment.
